Salt Spa Therapy has arrived at Radisson Blu Hotel, Galway  -  08 March 2011

Renowned world-wide as a 100% natural, safe and drug-free therapy proven to be useful in alleviating many different conditions – asthma, hay fever, bronchitis, acne, eczema, snoring, sinusitis and ear and respiratory infections, among others – salt therapy or halotherapy is the therapeutic use of exposure to salt air.

Originally noticed through the health improvements of miners in Polish salt mines, prolonged exposure to the specific climate of a salt mine appeared to help aid the relief of those with chronic pulmonary diseases and other respiratory problems.

Recreating that effect, the Radisson Blu Galway’s Salt Spa reproduces the microclimate of a natural salt cave using a special device called a dry saline diffuser, and in a setting built from natural, thick blocks of salt from Poland & the Dead Sea, constructed to resemble a cave-like environment. Treatment simply consists of relaxing in the Salt Spa, fully clothed, for a 45 minute session, and inhaling the microscopic particles of salts which are suspended in the air, which is at a temperature of 21 degrees centigrade, and 60-70% humidity.

The special bacteriologically clean air, rich in iodine and constantly infused with iodised negative ions, is saturated with molecules of various natural salts which are breathed into the system, allowing you to absorb clean, purified, germ-free air. The salt crystals loosen up phlegm, reduce the swelling in the airways, and can also strengthen the immune system.

After taking halotherapy treatments in the Salt Spa, breathing becomes easier, symptoms such as sneezing, coughing and shortness of breath are improved and medical drug usage may decrease significantly. Salt therapy is 100% natural, safe and drug-free, providing effective long-term relief, and as a complementary treatment, can also increase the effectiveness of prescribed medications.

Although almost everyone can benefit, salt therapy is recommended in particular for children, with a possible success rate of up to 90% in treating paediatric asthma claimed, and with this treatment recognised in many parts of the world as an important tool in the treatment of childhood asthma. The treatment is suitable for children of any age, even as young as a year.

There are also great benefits for athletes at the Salt Spa, Radisson Blu Hotel & Spa, Galway. As an athlete, where every advantage counts, salt therapy can assist in improving breathing patterns and contribute to improving an athlete’s overall well-being.

The primary goal of every athlete is to achieve their maximum potential, and one of the most important factors in attaining this is improving the breathing pattern. Poor breathing patterns reduce stamina and performance, increase the production of lactic acid and subsequently leave you with residual muscle soreness, increase dehydration and the occurrence of cramps, and greatly lengthen recovery time.

The aim of salt therapy is to normalise the breathing pattern, allowing athletes achieve better performance with less breath. This means athletes have more air in reserve and hence perform at an optimal level. Salt Spa at the Radisson Blu Hotel & Spa, Galway welcomes athletes and sports people of all ages and levels.

Adult and children’s sessions both cost €25 per 45 minute session, with session packages available. An advance purchase 5 session package with 5 Salt Spa sessions of 45 mins each costs €100, or an advance purchase 10 session package with 10 Salt Spa sessions of 45 minutes each costs €200.
